Tallahassee's Most Exciting Event All Year: The Escape Games

By Aaron Grubbs on October 22, 2016

“I have a name, but it isn’t my name. My face shows signs of age. I always mean the same thing, no matter what I say. I’m born in mourning and I last ‘til the end of days. Men plant me but I never grow. They run from me, but I never move. They look at me and see their future, rotting in the fields where I bloom. What am I?”

It’s interesting, right? I mean, if you’re able to concoct an answer to this one at all that’s impressive in my eyes but what if you had a time limit to stick to also? Could you figure it out in say… 30 seconds? What if correctly answering a series of questions like this was all that stood between you and you freedom? Could you escape?

Well, Breakout is bringing the Escape Games to Tallahassee and they invite you to come find out an answer to that exact question. Opening November 3rd and running through January 22, this might very well be one of the coolest events to take place in Tallahassee all year. Especially if you’re the kind of person that doesn’t really care for club life which at times can certainly feel like about the only consistently occurring means of entertainment in town. And while hitting the strip for the 5th White Trash Wednesday in a row might sound like an excellent time for your friends Becky and Chad, this isn’t your average outing or everyday experience. Breakout offers you something new. “Breakout is for those who would rather solve mysteries than watch someone else have all the fun.”

But what exactly is an escape game anyway? Well the idea originates in Japan actually and the real life version is based off the “Escape the Room” video games created in 2005 by Toshimitsu Takagi. With teams ranging in size from two to eight people, you’ll have 60 minutes to overcome the many mental and physical challenges, following clues, solving puzzles and cracking codes, within the labyrinth and make your way to the end of the course to successfully Breakout of your captivity.

Okay, seriously, who can honestly say they haven’t ever wanted to play a real life version of some of their favorite video games? And what’s cooler is you actually have some options on what kind of fantasy you want to do. Four stories have been released as of yet: The Kidnapping, Museum Heist, Operation: Casino and Hostage. A fifth story, Island Escape, is currently “confidential” but coming soon and sounds very promising as well; what with the exploding volcano and impending death by lava and what not.

If you are needing a little more convincing or somehow just haven’t quite yet been inspired to embark on the night of your life then seriously go to the website and check out the theme trailers they’ve put together for each storyline. My personal favorite I believe would have to be The Kidnapping. The film sets up the scene as a personal message from your captor in a sort of SAW-esque style gameplay where all the tools for your escape have already been provided… just so long as you’re clever enough to find them and learn how to use them. And you better get it done before he comes back because you’ll never get a second chance! It all sounds very sinister and if you really let yourself buy into the fantasy of it all I believe it will honestly be an unforgettable experience.

So you’ve reach the end of this article now. Have you figured out the answer to riddle? Here’s a hint: Think… Graveyard!
